| Horacio M. Borromeo, PhD |
Professor Horacio M. Borromeo is the USIPHIL Professor of Business Management. He was the former Associate Dean of two programs—the Master in Business Administration (MBA) and the Master in Management (MM) of the W. SyCip Graduate School of Business (WSGSB). From 2004 to 2006, he was the Director for International Programs, overseeing the Institute’s international academic partnerships. In 2007, he was appointed Director for Research, charged with coordinating the development of the Institute’s intellectual capital.
He teaches the human behavior in organizations course in the MBA, while working to complete his doctoral studies in organization development. He has also taught regularly in non-degree programs, and was the director of the Top Management Program (TMP). His major areas of specialization are organizational behavior and strategy. His current research interest is on emotional intelligence in organizations.
As a private consultant since the early 1980s, Prof. Borromeo has designed and conducted management development and leadership seminars, team-building and strategic planning workshops for a wide variety of companies and organizations throughout the ASEAN region such as the Asian Development Bank, the International Labor Organization, Caltex Pacific Indonesia, PT Kalbe Pharma (Indonesia), Bank Bumiputra, Bank Negara Malaysia, Intel Technologies (Malaysia), Singer Malaysia, Basic-FCB Advertising (Philippines), Eastern Telecommunications Philippines, Inc., Intel (Philippines), Pfizer-Quigley, Phelps-Dodge Philippines, Inc., Philippine Airlines, Philips Semiconductors (Philippines), Inc., Unilab (Philippines), Biro Pembangunan Sumber Manusia (Sabah), Jimenez Basic Advertising (Philippines), PT Telkom (Indonesia) and Stradcom (IT) Corporation (Philippines).
He has also done regional consulting work for the following: in Malaysia—TBWA-ISC Malaysia Group, Melewar Corporation, Advertising, Marketing and Communications Sdn. Bhd., Sterling Drug of Malaysia, Singer Corporation; in Singapore — Sterling Drug, Pacific Rim Office; in the Philippines — Norkis Group of Companies, Philippine Airlines, Transfarm & Company, Inc. (distributors of Daewoo automobiles). He was a Director of Pacific Dynamics Pte. Ltd., a Singapore consulting firm. He is presently a Director of Stradcom International Holdings, Inc., and United Technologies, Inc., and a Corporate Director and Vice-Chairman of Stradcom Corporation, in the Philippines.
Before joining the Institute in 1977, Prof. Borromeo served as President of a Filipino-Japanese joint venture in the manufacture and sale of stringed instruments. He was involved in the management of the nationwide operations of a Philippine-Hongkong joint venture in the processing and export of frozen seafood. He also owned and managed a textile dealership and a family handicraft export firm. He started his career as a management trainee at IBM Philippines in 1969.
Prof. Borromeo has been a full-time faculty member from 1977 to the present. His teaching experience extends to other Philippine and foreign institutions. In 1993, he taught an elective course on Total Quality in Asean Firms in the MBA program of the University of Southern California. He was a visiting member of the directing staff of Australian Administrative Staff College (now the Mt. Eliza Business School) in 1982. He has delivered a case teaching workshop for the faculty of economics and business, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He began his academic career by teaching research methods, industrial sociology, social pyschology, and modernization theory at Maryknoll College in 1970-71. He joined the research staff of the Institute of Philippine Culture, Ateneo de Manila University, from 1969 to 1971 while concurrently a graduate student in social anthropology.
Prof. Borromeo obtained his doctorate in Organization Development in 2009, and holds a Master in Management degree from the Asian Institute of Management (1977). He received his Bachelor of Arts in Behavioral Sciences from the Ateneo de Manila University (1969). He is a member of the American Management Association and the Academy of International Business.
