Edilberto C. de Jesús, PhD

Edilberto C. de Jesús assumed office as president of the Asian Institute of Management on July 16, 2009. Having served as the Philippines’ Secretary of Education in 2002-2004, Edilberto “DJ” de Jesús brings with him solid experience in managing educational institutions. A highly respected academic, he was President (2003-2004) and Secretariat Director (2005-2007) of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). His other government posts are Presidential Adviser on Rural Development (1988-1992) and Deputy Commissioner of the Presidential Office of the Peace Commission (1987-1992) in President Corazon Aquino’s Cabinet.

As AIM’s chief executive officer, he has intimate knowledge of AIM, having joined the Master in Business Management program faculty in 1973. In 1980, he transferred to the faculty of the Rural Development Management program; he became its program chairman in 1986. He was appointed associate dean from 1992 to 1995. He established the AIM Policy Center in 1994.

Besides AIM, Mr. de Jesús has served other educational institutions and organizations. He was president of Far Eastern University (FEU) in Manila (1995-2002) and the University of the Cordilleras in Baguio City (2008-2009). In 2002, he was elected president of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities. He was also a member of the Coordinating Council for Private Educational Associations Board of Trustees. Mr. de Jesús was a Fellow of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore in 1976 and a Visiting Fulbright Professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1985-1986. He has published books and research internationally. He has been an editorial board member of the University of Michigan’s Journal of Southeast Asian Business and of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies’ Sojourn. His civic and professional engagements include membership in the Asia Society International Council and the Philippine National Museum Board of Trustees.

Mr. de Jesús completed his Master of Philosophy and Ph.D. in History at Yale University. He took courses in History and Comparative Literature at Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), and courses in US Diplomatic and East Asian History at the University of Kansas. He graduated cum laude from the B.A. Honors Course in the Humanities of AdMU. AdMU, FEU, and Xavier University Cagayan de Oro have conferred on him a Ph. D. in the Humanities, Honoris Causa. With his extensive experience working with academicians, government, international organizations, private sector, and NGOs, the new AIM president is seen to drive further the Institute’s mission—to make a difference in sustaining the growth of Asian societies by developing professional, entrepreneurial, and socially responsible leaders and managers.
